So now the 2012 is here and time to plan for future gardens. We would like to thank our loyal customers for a good year once again. It is because of you that we are still around and hope to be around for many years to come. I have updated the website with our new varieties of 2012! We do not sell the plants through the internet but we have many of the plants at Honeymoon Acres located on Hwy 57 just north of New Holstein.

Herbs


Basil

Lemon

12-14 in. Heirloom. A tender annual that is very useful as an accent (lemon) with tea, chicken, fish and vegetables. Annual.

African Blue

Upright growth habit. It is a vigourous plant with dark green to purple leaves.


Sweet Large Leaf

18 in. Heirloom. Italian Lettuce leaf type. Green or dried, chiefly used for seasoning. Annual.

Lemon Sweet Dani

20-24 in. Masses of tiny white flowers held above highly distinctive lemon scented leaves. Very attractive growth habit make this variety valuable as both a flowering and vegetative ornamental plant. Annual.

Cinnamon

2-14 in. (Mexican Spice). A tender annual that is very useful as an accent with tea, fish, poultry and as an all-purpose seasoning. Annual.




Catnip

Nepeta cataria

18 in. Heirloom. Green or dried leaves used for seasoning and as a tea for nervous headaches and upset stomachs. Perennial.

Chamomile Roman

Chamaemelum nobile

4-6 in. Heirloom. Popular perennial groundcover. A low-growing perennial having the same medicinal values as the annual strain. Best grown in a cool, shaded area.

Chives

Allium schoenoprasum

10-12 in. Heirloom. Excellent onion flavor for cooking and seasoning. Used in China over 3,000 years ago. Perennial.

Chives Garlic

Allium tuberosum

10-12 in. (Chinese Leeks). Heirloom. Mild garlic flavor; grassy leaves are broader and taller than regular onion chives. Very popular in salads and stir-fry recipes. If they begin to stretch, cut back for dense growth. Beautiful, sweet-scented white flowers

Cilantro/Coriander

Santo

Slow to bolt type. 15 in. Grown for its leaves rather than seeds. Very popular in Mexican cuisine, at its best when leaves are used fresh for its full flavor. Herbalists use the leaves in a tea to aid digestive problems.

Dill

Fernleaf (Anethum graveolens)

Annual. Dwarf dill with high leaf yields.1992 AAS winner. Very slow to bolt. Abundant, dark blue-green foliage. Great in containers or in small spaces. Ht. 26-32".

 


Long Island Mammoth (Anethum graveolens)

75 days. Annual. Plant produces very flavorful leaves and seeds. Seeds are used as a pickling spice and leaves are used in omelettes, fish dishes, and salads. Also used as a garnishes. Leaves can be dried for later use. This variety matures more quickly than others and also has higher yields.

Fennel

Sweet Florence

18-24 in. Annual. Grown for their large, firm bulbs and its great taste its one of the best for fall harvesting. Can also be spring planted. Great breaded, fried, and shaved raw into salads, grilled, roasted or cooked slowly with tomatoes and garlic. Slow cooking brings out the wonderful sweetness that so many people find delightful.

Horehound

Marrubium vulgare

24 in. Heirloom. Early settlers used this herb as a honey flavored tea remedy for coughs, colds, tuberculosis, hepatitis, and as a laxative. Current herbalists suggest using it as a gargle for tonsillitis, sore throat, and coughing. Perennial.

Lavender

Grosso

This is the classic lavender used in sachets, perfumes, wands, etc. Rounded habit and oblong to spear shaped, foliage is aromatic and grey-green and flowers are deep, dark violet, appearing in July and August. Thrives in full sun and loose, well-drained soil. Little to no fertilization best. To keep plants compact, prune soon after flowering.

Lovage

Levisticum officinale

50 in. Heirloom. Beautiful clusters of yellow flowers. Aromatic seeds used in cakes. Celery-like plant, ideal in soups and salads. Herbalists believe the root can be used as a natural diuretic, like Parsley. Perennial.

Lemon Balm

Melissa officinalis

70 days. Perennial. Plant produces beautiful fragrant leaves used for delightful teas, sauces, salads, soups, stews, and summer drinks. When used to make tea, it is said to stimulate the heart and calms the nerves. Plant has lemon scented leaves which can be dried for storage. A variety native of Europe.

Marjoram Compacta

Sweet

20 in. Fresh or dried leaves for seasoning. Roman herbalists believed this herb could heal bruises, treat snakebite, soothe sore muscles and joints, and treat eye infections. Marjoram tea will help settle the stomach and help avoid motion sickness. Annual.

Mint

Peppermint (Mentha)

20 in. Mentha piperita. Heirloom. As a tea, it may help to prevent stomach ulcers and stimulate bile secretion. Used as an antacid. Grow in your garden to control insects, rub leaves on your clothing to repel fleas, mosquitos, ticks, gnats, and flies. Perennial. Zones: 3-8

Spearmint (Mentha spicata)

10 in. Mentha spicata. Sweet-scented leaves for flavoring. Will attract butterflies all season. Perennial. Zones: 3-7








Chocolate (Mentha x piperita f. citrata)

Chocolate mint grows 12 to 18 inches. Preferring full sun, this aromatic herb has bronze-green foliage and attractive burgundy stems. You'll find Chocolate mint a winner as a dessert garnish and in recipes.


Ginger

It has a vigorous spreading habit. The foliage is green tasting of ginger









Pineapple (Mentha rotoundifolia variegata)

Striking plant with soft green and cream dappled foliage. Slightly fruity scent. Use leaves in summer drinks and salads.

Apple

It has a vigorous upright habit. The foliage is grey green that tastes like apple.





Orange (Mentha x piperita citrata)

Orange mint is a perennial herb with orange and mint scented leaves. High in Vitamin A and C, fresh leaves can be used in salads, desserts, and garnishes. Great for making mint sauce for lamb or fish. Try making orange mint jelly and orange mint vinegar. Adds refreshing taste to cold drinks, too.

Oregano

Greek (Origanum vulgare hirtum)

14-24 in. Heirloom. Used for sauces and seasoning. Strong, spicy flavor. Add to sauces and pasta salads. As a tea, herbalists believe it can be used as a digestive aid, relief from arthritis, relieve discomfort for chest congestin, colds, flu and effective as a tranquilizer. Perennial.

Italian (Origanum vulgare hirtum)

90 days. Perennial. Plant produces very flavorful dark green leaves. One of the best tasting Italian Oregano varieties around. Excellent for Pizza and Italian dishes. Suitable for containers. A variety from Italy






Pesto Peretuo

18 to 48 inches tall, 18 to 36 inches wide. Used for fresh, dried, or frozen leaves for flavoring Italian or Asian cuisinePesto lovers will want Ocimum x citriodorum 'Pesto Perpetuo' in their gardens. Leaves are variegated, giving this colorful plant ornamental value.

It has a medium spreading habit with green foliage. It has a spicy/hot taste to it.

Parsley

Plain Leaf

16 in. Heirloom. Plain or flat, deep cut dark green leaves with a very strong flavor. An excellent addition to salads, cooked vegetables, soups, or stews. Taller and stronger flavor than the standard strain. Annual.








Curly

12 in. Heirloom. Finely curled, compact dark green leaves, very productive. Early herbalists believed this herb to be a diuretic for kidney problems, fluid accumulation and a substitute for quinine to treat malaria. It is very high in Vitamins A and C and is an excellent natural breath freshener, digestive aid and tea to treat high blood pressure and rheumatism. More compact growing than the standard garden variety. Annual.

Rosemary

Perennial used for cooking and potpourri especially for poultry.

Off Arp

Well loved shrub with grey-green scented foliage and delicate blue flowers in spring. Plant in a sheltered position, preferably against a south facing wall. Use the leaves to flavour lamb and pork or infuse in wine vinegar to produce a hair rinse.

Prostrata

Attractive low growth with a Japanese style spreading habit. Requires a very sheltered south facing site. Winter protection is advisable.

Savory

hortensis (Summer)

12-18 in. Heirloom. For flavoring salads, dressings, stews and gravies. As a tea, will reduce fever and aid digestion. Widely used as an herb in soups, stuffings, sausages and stews. Repels insects from the garden. Needs light to germinate. Annual.

Winter

Forms a clumping plant that grows to a semi-evergreen. Much more bristly and woody than summer savory. It has a strong peppery flavor. Used for aroma, antiseptic, stimulant, etc





Stevia

Rebaudiana

It has a vigorous upright habit with white flowers and green foliage. The leaves can be used as a sugar substitute. It actually tastes like sugar

Tarragon

French (Artemisia dracunculus)

The true tarragon with the strong, distinct flavour. Highly important culinary herb, especially in French cuisine. Requires a light, well drained soil. Winter protection is advisable

Thyme

Lemon (Thymus citriodorus)

Fresh green foliage with a warm lemon scent. Combines well with chicken dishes. Grow in a sunny position and a light soil.

English (Thymus vulgaris)

85 days. Perennial. Plant produces flavorful leaves. Used in salads, stews, sauces, and pickles. Excellent for poultry and fish dishes. Plant Height: 12".

French

It has a spreading compact habit with green leaves

Golden Lemon

It has a spreading compact habit with green w/ yellow edge leaves.

Verbena

Lemon

Lemon verbena makes one of the best beverage teas, especially when blended with mint. The leaves can be dried for potpourris. It also is very nice for infused oils or message oil.
